Many telecommunications companies offer long distance phone
service. But before you sing on the dotted line for their
service you need to understand the basics of long distance
phone calls and which company best suites you.
When you sign up for long distance service, you need to
change or switch your long distance provider. It usually
takes several days before you have the service active on
your line. Once you have the service established, you will
be dialing directly from your phone. Switched long distance
service only works for the lines on which it was activated
and it doesn't work from cell phones.
Prepaid calling cards provide you with instant long
distance. Calling cards work with any touch tone phone and
an access number and authorization code (PIN) needs to be
dialed before each long distance call.
For the best connection to your destination number consider
using a switched long distance service. This is the most
reliable but is usually more expensive than those from a
calling card.
A Third Party Verification (TPV) is required when signing
up online. By dialing the number shown on the form, the
TPV will record your voice granting permission to switch
your long distance provider. This will act as an
electronic signature for your long distance agreement.
It normally takes 3-4 business days to activate your new
service depending on your local phone company. Many
companies will issue a 700 test number for you to dial to
check that your services have been activated.
After your line is activated, you can start dialing your
long distance calls directly. Your local phone service will
not change. However, you will start to receive a separate
bill for your new long distance service provider.
If you are running a business, you might want to go in for a
toll free number. Toll free numbers allow the cost of a call
to be charged to the party that receives the call. For the
party that places the call, there will be no charge. Toll
free numbers are usually used by businesses to allow their
customers to reach the company free of toll charges.
With the basic knowledge of what the long distance phone
services offer, you can make your choice according to the
purpose for which you will need to make long distance calls.
